CompTIA A+ Exam Objectives
220-1101 & 220-1102
CompTIA A+ Core 1 covers five major domains that reflect the work of entry-level IT support professionals. Mobile Devices (15%) focuses on configuring laptops, tablets, and smartphones, including hardware replacement, wireless setup, accessories, synchronization, and common connectivity issues. Expect to know ports, docking options, Bluetooth, NFC, and mobile troubleshooting basics.
Networking (20%) tests foundational networking knowledge needed in support roles. This includes protocols and port numbers, TCP/IP basics, Wi-Fi standards, routers, switches, IP addressing, VPN concepts, and small office/home office network configuration. You should also understand the purpose of common networking tools and how they are used to diagnose problems.
Hardware (25%) covers internal computer components, storage devices, power supplies, motherboards, CPUs, RAM, printers, display technologies, and cables/connectors. This domain is heavily practical, so candidates need to identify parts, compare technologies, and understand installation and compatibility considerations.
Virtualization and Cloud Computing (11%) introduces basic virtual machine concepts and cloud service models. A+ does not go deeply into enterprise cloud architecture, but you should understand what virtualization is, why organizations use it, and how cloud solutions differ by deployment and service type.
Hardware and Network Troubleshooting (29%) is the largest domain and one of the most important. It measures your ability to diagnose and resolve issues related to PCs, mobile devices, printers, wired and wireless networks, and performance problems. Questions often present symptoms and ask for the most likely cause or best next step.
